A Eurasian is a person of mixed Asian and European ancestry. Eurasians include people with ancestry from anywhere in Europe and anywhere in Asia. The term was originally coined in 19th-century British India to identify a person born to usually a British father and an Indian mother. These mixed offspring were later called Anglo-Indians. In addition to British many were also of mixed Portuguese , Dutch , Irish or, more rarely, French descent. The term has been used in anthropological literature since the s.

Individuals of multiracial backgrounds make up a significant portion of the population in many parts of the world. In North America , studies have found that the multiracial population is continuing to grow. In many countries of Latin America and the Caribbean , people with multiracial backgrounds make up the majority of the population.
