A man has been arrested in connection to the beating of a transgender woman in Dallas. Dallas police announced on their blog that Edward Thomas, a year-old black man, was charged Sunday with aggravated assault. Thomas is in custody at the Dallas County Jail. The Dallas Police Department said the incident is being flagged to the district attorney as a possible hate crime. Thomas' arrest comes two days after the alleged assault, which was captured on video and spread widely over social media. The video shows the woman in a parking lot near the apartment complex when a man in a white long-sleeved T-shirt and white shorts runs up to her and slings her to the ground.
A group of men surrounded and beat a transgender woman in Dallas on Friday afternoon, repeatedly punching and kicking her in broad daylight as she tried to escape an attack that police are calling a possible hate crime. The incident began after Muhlaysia Booker was in a minor traffic accident at the Royal Crest Apartments, police said.. Video posted by Facebook user Taj Mahal begins by showing Booker, in a pink wig, in the middle of an intersection with a huge crowd around her. It appeared as though Booker was addressing the crowd — she said later on Facebook that someone had taken her two phones — but because she was far from the camera and it was loud, it's unclear what she said. The video then seems to flip to selfie mode, where two people address the camera — the person taking the video and a man in a white shirt and shorts. The video then flips around and shows the man in a white shirt closing in on Booker, pummeling her to the ground and kicking her.
Muhlaysia Booker, the young transgender woman from Dallas who was brutally beaten by a gang of men in broad daylight last month, was shot and killed over the weekend, according to local police. Booker was the victim of a possible hate crime in April, when a group of men pushed her to the ground and started punching and kicking her as she lay curled up in a fetal position. A three-minute video of the parking-lot assault went viral, and she told police after the attack that her assailants shouted homophobic slurs. One man, Edward Thomas, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury.
A transgender woman who was the victim of an attack caught on video in Dallas earlier this month has been released from the hospital and is speaking out for the first time following the brutal incident. Muhlaysia Booker, 23, accidentally backed into a vehicle last week outside of an apartment complex and, according to police, the driver of that car, year-old Edward Thomas, refused to let her leave, pointing a gun at her while demanding she pay for the damage. Video shows Thomas doing just that, while bystanders watch, and in some cases take part, kicking Booker as she covers her head against the blows Thomas repeatedly delivers.
