Blue Jay. Blue Jay: Medium, noisy jay with bright blue upperparts, pale gray underparts, distinct head crest, and neck surrounded with a curious black necklace. Black-barred wings and tail have prominent white patches. Direct flight with steady and bouyant wing beats. Glides between perches or to the ground. Winter Wren.

The ABC list contains species and one "slash" entry for a record which could not be identified at the species level. Of them, 75 are classed as casual, as accidental, and two as hypothetical. Eight have been introduced by humans and four have been extirpated. Nesting has been recorded for taxa species or identifiable subspecies including some which are classed as casual and accidental.
Red-breasted Sapsucker in Madera Canyon After striking out on finding the Red-breasted Sapsucker in Madera Canyon on November 3rd, Chris Rohrer and I were right back at it in less than a week. Chris had Friday off from work and we jumped in my car and headed south.
Many of the birds in this gallery are transits, either on their way south to their wintering grounds, or in the spring, heading north to their breeding grounds. Others are year round, or winter residents.
